Michał M. Kosman, POLITIKA NEMAČKE DEMOKRATSKE REPUBLIKE PREMA JUGOSLAVIJI ZA VREME VLADAVINE VALTERA ULBRIHTA
DOI: 10.29362/2350.kos.243-256
Michał M. Kosman, POLITICS OF THE GDR TOWARDS YUGOSLAVIA DURING THE REIGN OF WALTER ULBRICHT
Established in 1949, the German Democratic Republic from the beginning of its existence sought to obtain a strong legitimacy for its statehood. One of the tools for achieving this goal was active foreign policy and anchoring in the Eastern bloc as well as close cooperation with the Soviet Union. It can be seen that the attitude of the GDR to Yugoslavia was volatile and was a consequence of the relations between the USSR and Yugoslavia. The article describes the most important stages of the policy of the GDR towards Yugoslavia. Their origin was determined by the relations between the communist parties of both countries and the initial apparent kindness, followed by the deterioration of bilateral relations along with the intensification of the conflict between J.B. Tito and J. Stalin. The short-term improvement took place in 1956-1957. Its culmination was the conclusion of diplomatic relations between the GDR and Yugoslavia, but soon the old disputes returned. The aim of the article is to discuss the evolution of GDR policy towards Yugoslavia over the period of the rule of Walter Ulbricht, that is, from the establishment of the East German state to the early seventies of the twentieth century. First of all, German monographs and press articles were used.
