Milutin Živković, SISTER-FRIENDLY CITIES: KRAGUJEVAC, BYDGOSZCZ AND BIELSKO-BIAŁA (1971‒1991)
The extensive international cooperation of Kragujevac also included relations with the People’s Republic of Poland, within which the ties with Bydgoszcz and Bielsko-Biała stood out. Through these contacts, the Serbian city strengthened its socialist system and anti-war attitudes, as well as the state policy of “non-alignment”. The opportunity was also used to realize lucrative business deals, primarily with the branch of the Polish motor industry in Bielsko-Biała. Political and economic cooperation was accompanied by cultural, educational and sports cooperation, and tourist trips about vacations were intensive. However, it could not be said that the full potential of Kragujevac’s cooperation with Bydgoszcz and Bielsko-Biała has been realized. But, in addition to numerous problems of different nature through time, the relations have been preserved to this day, which in itself, is a great success for all tree cities.
