Institute for Contemporary History

is a research institution dedicated to furthering the understanding of the recent past, facilitating the study of political, social, economic and cultural history in the context of Serbian, Yugoslav, Balkan, European, and global society.

Founded over half a century ago, the Institute builds on those traditions. Scholarly activity in the Institute is conducted in accordance with our program, through research projects and the development of scholarly cooperation. Our results are presented through our publishing activity, the organization of international, regional and local scholarly symposia, as well as the publication of our journal "Istorija 20.veka" (History of the 20th Century).

Located in downtown Belgrade, at 11 Nikola Pašić Square, (Trg Nikole Pašića 11), the Institute hosts a rich library, a documentation and digital center, thus fostering professional access to our work and promoting public interest in the recent past.

As part of the Day of the Municipality of Velika Plana, organized by the Masuka Culture Center, on April 26, a promotion of the book "Serbian State Guard 1942-1944" was held in the Gallery in Staro Selo.

April 7, 2023: Institute associate Miloš Žikić defended his doctoral dissertation

On April 7, 2023, in the Ceremonial Hall of the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade, the doctoral dissertation on the topic "Yugoslav-Bulgarian relations 1929-1941" was defended by Miloš Žikić, an associate of the Institute.

As part of the forum "Serbia in the Second World War", on April 5, 2023, at the Faculty of Philosophy in Banja Luka, lectures were held by the Institute's associates Nebojša Stambolija, Rade Ristanović and Milutin Živković.

January 31, 2023: Institute Day Celebrated

Traditionally, as every January 31, the anniversary of the founding of the Institute of Contemporary History was celebrated. After the formal session of the Scientific Council, jubilee awards and the "Ljubomir Ljuba Petrović" award were presented.

On January 25, 2023, in the Ceremonial Hall of the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade, the doctoral dissertation on "Eurocommunism and Yugoslavia 1968‒1980" was defended by Luka Filipović, an associate of the Institute.

January 19, 2023: The “Andrej Mitrović” award was given to Radosav Tucović, an associate of the Institute

The "Andrej Mitrović" award (Andrej-Mitrović-Preis) of the Michael Žikić Foundation (Michael-Zikic-Stiftung) is awarded every other year for excellent doctoral dissertations, which in the field of social sciences and humanities advance knowledge about Germany's relations with Serbia or Yugoslavia.
