Milutin Živković: Warriors from the border

The new monograph by my colleague Dr. Milutin Živković is the result of extensive research spanning more than a decade. It brings together the processes and conclusions from his earlier opus on the past of Stara Raška/Sandžak, with new data, primarily from archival materials of German and Albanian provenance. Therefore, the monograph “Warriors from the Border. Old Raška Muslims in the German Army, SS and Police (1941–1945)” offers readers answers, some of them long-awaited, to the questions: What are the reasons for the collaboration of Muslims with the Germans? How widespread was this process and what were its ultimate goals? What is the difference between those who fight in German units and those who fight with German units? Who is this “warrior from the border”, viewed through a socio-economic prism? What was his post-war fate? etc. The book “revives” this episode from the period of World War II in Serbia with the help of numerous lists of Muslims in the German forces (over 70 pages) and previously unpublished photographs.
