Nikola Mijatov: Japanese martial arts in Serbia 1911-2011

Dr. Nikola Mijatova’s monographs deal with Japanese martial arts in Serbia, its history and philosophy. Japan is a country rich in martial tradition where its skills have spread throughout the world. For the first time, Serbia got to know the skills of the ancient samurai way back in 1911, through Jiu Jitsu.

The monograph traces the arrival and development of all Japanese skills that found their home in Serbia. Thus, judo, karate, aikido, kendo, iaido, nunchaku and many others found their second homeland in Serbia, which gave birth to a galaxy of masters of these skills of the highest rank.

Special attention was given to the skills that were established in the military-police system, where they became an integral segment of training. Mastering jiu jitsu, judo and karate is a necessary characteristic of every policeman or soldier, and the book traces the very beginnings of this process so that today these skills would be an integral part of the Serbian defense system.

Overall, the book provides an overview of the entire process of development of Japanese martial arts in Serbia, brings a plethora of biographies of the most outstanding fighters from both Serbia and Japan. The book provides the reader with an insight into the philosophical and technical aspects of each skill, as well as its rich history in Serbia.
