The growing interest among researchers in the study of history after the year 2000 has highlighted the need for a new journal within the scientific community. These topics are increasingly relevant, and we are convinced that, over time, the demand for a publication of this profile will become even more pronounced. As this century enters its second quarter and the legal deadline for the release of archival materials approaches, a significant amount of diverse historical sources and scientific literature is already available. Researchers from various social and humanistic disciplines are using these resources to study events, phenomena, and processes from the recent past.
The journal Contemporary History, whose first issue is now before readers, will initially focus on the history of Serbia and Yugoslavia in the 20th and 21st centuries, with the long-term goal of increasingly emphasizing the history of the 21st century. We also welcome papers addressing broader regional, Eastern European, and European events, phenomena, and processes, especially those offering innovative and comparative perspectives or highlighting transnational influences. We are open to interdisciplinary research and papers that draw on insights from political science, sociology, anthropology, cultural studies, and related fields. At the same time, we will consider works based on traditional historiographical methodology that deepen knowledge in political, diplomatic, military, and other areas of history. We aim to pay special attention to the history of modern historiography and to the theory and methodology of modern history. This focus is particularly important because we recognize the profound global political, social, scientific, and technological changes that, since the end of the 20th century and throughout the 21st century, have radically transformed the world, including the work, methods, and perspectives of contemporary historians. We believe that history is not only a reconstruction of past events but also a crucial foundation for interpreting the present and rethinking society, and that historical research is vital for building a comprehensive and inclusive historical consciousness. In this context, changes in modern society present new challenges and require new methods, perspectives, and solutions, which we seek to explore together.
Our goal in the coming years is to build a high-quality platform for scientific exchange and research on contemporary Serbian and regional history, and we hope that, with the support of collaborators from various countries and disciplines, we will achieve this.
